This trophy was his third at Cannes after the Grand Prix, the second highest honor at the festival for his thriller ” Oldboy ” in 2003 and the Jury Prize, the third honor, for his horror film ” Thirst, this is my blood ” in 2009.

Park Chan-Wook is the second South Korean director to win this distinction in his category after filmmaker Im Kwon-taek for his historical drama film ” Drunk on Women and Painting ” (Chiwaseon) in 2002.

In his speech, Park Chan-Wook hailed the global film industry for overcoming several years of the pandemic (Covid-19).

He stated :

Fans didn’t go to cinemas but it was the time when we realized the value of cinema

While we have hope and strength to overcome this pandemic, I am confident that we filmmakers will keep movie theaters and cinema alive forever .”

🥇 Best Actor Award for Song Kang-ho (discovered in Parasite),
here in the film👉 “NOS BELLES ETOILES” / BROKER

Song Kang-ho has become the first South Korean actor to win a Best Actor Award at Cannes.
(Jeon Do-yeon won the Best Actress Award in Drama “Secret Sunshine” in 2007)

He said:
“I am truly grateful and honoured. I would like to thank director Kore-eda who is a great artist.”

“I would also like to share this gratitude and honor with our cast members, Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Bae Doo-na, and Lee Joo-young. »

“I’m also really touched as an actor who worked with director Park Chan-Wook and partnered with him to win an award with ‘Thirst'”

“I’ll never forget the moment he ran to me and kissed me.”

He added that he was not acting for the purpose of winning an award but continued to strive to make good films and this helped him to participate in international film festivals and receive an award.

The festival never awards the Directing and Interpretation Prizes to the same work.

Director/screenwriter Park Chan-Wook noted that he and Song Kang-ho received the awards while attending the Cannes Film Festival with different films.

If me and Song had come to Cannes with a movie, one of us couldn’t have won ,” he said after his speech.
As we came here separately, we won trophies at the same time .”

I couldn’t stop running towards him,” said Park, who threw himself on Song and hugged him after his name was announced as the winner of the Best Actor Award.

He’s appeared in many good films and it’s time for him to win the award. »

The two worked together in many movies like ” Thirst, This is My Blood “, ” Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance ” (2002) and ” Joint Security Area ” (2000).

He asked Song to grant him the opportunity to do a new project together.
