It’s Chuseok, the harvest festival!

Thanks to the Korean Cultural Center in Paris

Chuseok – is one of the most important Korean holidays, and the date changes every year, according to the lunar calendar. It is also called Hangawi, which means “the greater half (of autumn)” and refers directly to August 15 of the lunar calendar, the day of the largest full moon.

This year, Chuseok takes place on September 21, and is celebrated with the family for 3 days.

We put on the traditional Hanbok costume, and we gather around delicious dishes accompanied by songpyeon, sweet rice cakes. This celebration gives thanks to the earth and its generosity, and the image of the full moon is omnipresent there as a symbol of abundant harvests. “

Customs of Chuseok
On the morning of Chuseok, children greet their parents in a traditional way while preparing different typical dishes for them. It used to be common for each member of the family to wear new clothes for the occasion, a custom known as ‘bim’. This custom is also still in practice during Seollal. Among the dishes of the ceremony are special ‘haepssal’ rice, alcohol and songpyeong cakes. The family then meets around the table set for the occasion to share a meal. After that, the family gets together for the ‘seongmyo’ custom. This custom consists of greeting the ancestors of the family. This is a typical practice of traditions in Korea.By visiting the graves of their ancestors, families remove the weeds before eating a new, simple meal.

Songpyeon are small cakes made from rice flour and filled with honey, sesame seeds or sweet beans. Steamed and scented with pine needles, they are inseparable from the Chuseok party. The custom is that they are prepared in family and tasted throughout the three days of celebration.

Royal Korean sweets for fall.

… and for distant visitors to our site who may be interested in this, on our side of the Northern Hemisphere, tomorrow September 22, summer will also give way to fall.

It is the Equinox of September or of Autumn, one of the two times of the year when the day will have exactly the same duration as the night.

The days will become shorter, the sunshine and pleasant temperatures will give way to winds and rains.

Everyone has their own way of appreciating this time of year, for us it is the nostalgic and romantic season of fallen leaves, where with a little luck we will still have mellow and sunny days just before the first frosts of the winter.

It was our weather report for the day!

🧡 HAPPY Chuseok 🧡 HAPPY SEPTEMBER Equinox🧡
